Last Wednesday night I went to an open mic in Topeka. It was held at B and B Backyard. B and B Backyard is a live music venue in North Topeka. It is located behind Bill's Diner on Kansas Avenue. It is half a block south of the intersections of Highway 24 and Kansas Avenue. B and B Backyard name describes their venue. It has an open area that looks like a backyard with a stage at the end of the yard. Behind the stage are trees that provide some shade. On the other end of the backyard is a remodeled shed with a stage and stage lighting. In front of the stage is a big awning to provide protection from the sun and rain. Also, did I mention that they have BBQ. Good stuff.
I was able to play six songs at the open mic. Justin Fowler was the driving force behind starting a songwriter's night in Topeka. He is a member of the band, Slow Ya Roll. He is also a very good songwriter and keyboard player. All of the songwriters received a chance to play our songs. We closed out the night by all of us getting on stage and playing a cover song together. The cover song that we played was a Jamie Johnson song. The song was called, " In Color," Everyone had a great time and you should have seen us "In color."
