Okay. How many adults will admit that they like kids movies? My wife makes fun of me because I do. She refuses to watch a kid's movie, so I will watch them while she is sleeping. The other day I watched Spiderman at 6am. I loved it. I don't know which Spiderman movie it was. I know there are many sequels with different stars.
This movie had what I will call a defining moment. Before I talk about the defining moment I need to give you a little background. Spiderman has a girl friend. The girl friend's dad is dying. On his deathbed he makes Spiderman promise him that he will never be with his daughter. The reason he asked Spiderman for this promise is because people close to Spiderman will get hurt. Everyone is always out to hurt the hero. Or to hurt the hero by hurting the people close to the hero.
Spiderman agrees to do this. He has no choice. This man is dying. How can a hero deny a dying man's wish? Spiderman ignores his girl friend. He fails to go to her father's funeral. To the casual observer without any insight we would all agree. Spiderman is a jerk. The girlfriend comes to see Spiderman and she is hurt. He won't answer her questions. The last question she asks before she walks away is , Did my Dad make you promise to leave me? He doesn't answer.
A few days later Peter Parker (Spiderman) is at school with his ex- girlfriend. He is late for the high school class that they are both in. The teacher confronts Spiderman in front of the class. She tells him that it is unacceptable to be late. He apologizes and says, I'm sorry, I promise it won't happen again.
Okay, we are getting close to the end. Peter is getting ready to sit down at his desk. His ex-girlfriend is sitting in the desk behind him. The teacher says, " Don't make promises you can't keep Mr. Parker."
The deciding moment for the whole movie is now. This is the line and quote of the whole movie. He looks at the girl and says, " Yeah, but those are the best kind. "
Peter Parker made a decision. Not unlike many of the decisions we will make in life. A decision that is life changing. He is breaking a promise to pursue his true love. Love is more important than a promise to a dying man. Love conquers all. You gotta love it.
