I remember being a kid and going with my Mom and Dad to the nursing home. Grandpa Cowhick ( my Mom's Dad) was in an old white house that had been converted to a nursing home. I remember sitting in the living room and watching NBA basketball on TV. This was when the stars of the NBA were Earl (The Pearl) Monroe, Willis Reed, Wilt Chamberlain,Jerry West, and Lew Alcindor (Karrem Abdul Jabbar). The nursing home had a funny smell and I sure was glad I could watch the ball games.
Yesterday, I turned the calendar forward forty eight years. I was going for my first time to see my Mom in the nursing home. She is ninety-five years old and has lived on her own for the last seven years since Dad passed away. She fell at home in her kitchen on the day after Christmas and isn't hitting on all eight cylinders health wise. She spent four days in the hospital and needed to go to the nursing home for skilled nursing. Skill nursing means that she isn't able to function by herself at home. She needs some help. Someone to cook, clean, and do laundry. All those jobs she did for years raising us four kids.
I got to the nursing home at 11am. It wasn't too hard to find. It was located across the street from the Junior High School. I walked in the front door into the lobby. I tried the doors but they were locked. There was a silver square button that said, Press to open door. It really helps to know how to read, if you do it. I walked into a lobby area and their was a glassed in area with the lights off. The main office and reception area must be closed on Sundays, I thought.
I stepped out into the hall and looked left and right for the best direction to go to find some help in locating Mom's room. Looking to the right, at the far end of the hall was a man in a wheel chair. I looked a little closer and I noticed he didn't have on a shirt, or pants, or (wait a second), he's naked. He was talking loudly to a nurse and she was calmly answering his questions. I couldn't catch what was going on, it was then and there that I was positive that to get to my Mom's room, I needed to turn left.
What a start to my first visit in a nursing home for many years. One thing I do know is not to judge a situation to harshly. Maybe, they are running slow on laundry. This resident has reached his final straw. If their not going to provide clean underwear in a timely fashion, Fine then! I'll roll down the halls and next time they might be more diligent on getting the laundry done in a timely fashion.
I woke up today at home and I was very thankful. My wife had folded my laundry and I had clean underwear. It is going to be a great day.
