If life is a race, why do I feel like I'm running with the turtles? We all know the story about the turtle and the hare. The rabbits is so fast and so gifted. He is made for racing. He is confident in his ability. He has been chased by dogs, coyotes and even runs fast from his shadow. His whole life is based on how fast he can get from point A to point B.
The rabbits are the achievers in the world that make it look so easy. They are the person that the first time they do comedy they win a contest. The first song they play for a publisher in Nashville is a #1 song. The first time they sell a Electroux vaccuum sweeper going door to door, they get the sale. They win American Idol and they have never sang in front of a crowd. The only audience they have sung to are the cows on the farm and their Mom and Dad.
I don't know if these people are really rabbits. They sound more like a unicorn to me. A make believe creature that is beautiful, stunning, and magical. I have been around long enough to know that I am not in this category. Sure, occasionally I will do something and be good at it. You noticed I used the word good not great. I would chalk it up to beginners luck.
I remember when I was the sixth grade. I came upon a skill that I didn't know I had until I went to gym class. The activity for the day was volleyball. No, I wasn't the spiker or the setter. I learned that I could serve the ball. No, it wasn't fast but I could get it over the net and that is how you score points. With a little practice, I could serve to the weak link on the other team. This made me look better than I really was. Winning was what counted and everybody loves to be a winner. Not much demand for serving volleyballs these days. lol
Maybe you have a skill that came easy. That is great. Chances are you have an even better story. A story about something you weren't good at. A story about your journey. The ups and downs, the starting and stopping, and the finish. Together we can keep on chasing, working, achieving and failing.
Welcome to my series about Running with Turtles. Join me as we race to the finish line together.
