I decided that I wanted to start sending my songs to music publishers in 2013. I write country music and folk songs. I decided my best bet was to go with a Nashville songwriting publisher. I went to a website called Songwriter Source.com I I found a couple different types of publishing companies. There are the major publishing companies who only want established song writers. I decided to go with an independent publisher but I wanted one that has had some success. Here is a list of the ones that I chose. Big Fish Music Publishing Group, Big Tractor Music, Bluewater Music, Cal IV Entertainment, Crutchfield Music Group, Jody Williams Music, Peer Music, Electric Mule Publishing, Big Yellow Dog, and Moraine Music Group. ( I chose Big Yellow Dog because it is Toby Keith's publishing company and I like Toby.)
I sent every company an introduction letter. I included a brief description of my music and genre that I like to write in. The purpose of the letter was to ask permission to send them songs to listen to. I sent out ten letter. 10! How many responses do you think a songwriter would get out of ten letters? None. Ouch! I did receive one returned back in the mail because the address was not accurate.
I had read that it is hard to get your songs listened to by publishing companies. Now I know how hard it is. I thought this was interesting and that you might be interested in learning this about publishing companies.
Okay. I could give up but I can't do that. On to the next idea.
