Have you ever struggled with ideas on what to write a song about? I treat this problem the same way I do a low energy level. I know that if I have no energy it might be a simple problem. It can be as simple as needing something to eat. The body can not function properly on empty. The same can be said about writing songs. I have two simple things that I do to keep the think tank full.
I read books. I read the Bible every day. Not only does this provide song ideas but it allows God's Word to speak to my life. That is alot more important than song ideas. I also read biographies. I have read about- George Carlin, Amy Winehouse, Bob Dylan, Glen Campbell, Willie Nelson, etc. I try to read about 3 books a month.
I listen to music. I like Pandora and listen to it. I also get CD's at the library. I will usually get 5 cd's. I will get two or three that I know I will like. Usually Country music. The other two I will stretch myself. Maybe blues, rock, folk, jazz, or pop. This is kinda like eating your musical vegetables. You don't have to like everything but it is beneficial to try them.
I hope this has encouraged you to keep on reading and listening to music.
