Have you ever been to the Walnut Valley Festival? It is a bluegrass festival that is located about 30 miles from Wichita, Kansas. It is mostly bluegrass and folk music. Personally, I like folk better than bluegrass. I have entered the songwriting contest the last four years. 2011 was my break through year. I think they learned that I was going to enter every year until I finally would get lucky and win. The prize for winning the contest is you get to perform your song on stage. I was runner-up and the first place group showed to play.
The last couple years I have enter the finger style international guitar competition. My odds of winning? Not good. That statement reminds me of the movie "Something about Mary." Jim Carey is talking to Mary and says, "What are my chances of us getting together?" She says, "One in a million." He is thrilled and starts celebrating and says, "Yes, I knew there was a chance." I understand perfectly.
Yesterday, January 10th is the date to sign up for the championship contests. The instrument contests are for Autoharp, finger style guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle, flat pick guitar, hammer dulcimer, and banjo. The cost to sign up is $15. The finger style guitar only 40 contestants. One year I was the very last contestant chosen to perform on the day of the event. It is best to sign up early and practice a lot if you are planning on competing seriously.
Now is a great time to buy your tickets. The tickets for all five days of the festival are $75. This offer is valid until February 15, 2013. Hope to see you there.
