I am a member of Nashville Songwriting Association International. I have been a member for three years and just signed up for my fourth year. I have found it to be very encouraging and believe it is helping me to write better songs. I sent in a new song that I wrote called, Welcome Home. Welcome Home is a song dealing with death and loss. Whenever you send in a song for evaluation you have choices on how you want your song to be evaluated. They go from take it easy on me and go up to the cold hard truth. You also have choices for what you want to do with the song. Some songs are written just for the writer, others to perform in your own concerts and others are written commercially to be performed by recording artists. I submitted Welcome Home as one of my own songs to perform myself but looking for suggestions on how to make it better. The evaluation I got was that my song was not commercial enough. It doesn't sound like what is being played on radio now. I am glad that my songs are not the cookie cutter songs that they are playing right now. I am me. I will write my songs. They will reflect who I am and what I believe. I don't have a publisher. I have no boss to tell me what and when I am going to write. The freedom of artistic control. You gotta love it.
